A Regular Meeting of the Flushing City Council was called to order on Monday, November 26, 2001 at 7:30 p.m. by Mayor Janice L. Gensel, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and invocation.

Approval of Agenda – Motion by Szukhent, seconded by Bade, to approve the agenda for the November 26, 2001 meeting.

 

            Yea:     Bade, Gault, Johnson, Salem, Szukhent, Gensel

            Abstain:            Girard

            Nay:     None

            Motion Carried.

 

MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC:

 

Elva Cook, 315 Sunnyside, addressed City Council.

 

PRESENTATIONS:

 

Sergeant David Lewicki, Flushing Firefighters Association, presented the City Council with “Freddie”, an interactive, remote control fire truck.  Firefighters use Freddie in the schools to reach young students on their level which tends to make them listen more.

 

            Council thanked the Flushing Firefighters for the donation of Freddie and expressed their appreciation.

CONSENT AGENDA – Motion by Szukhent, seconded by Gault, to approve the consent agenda, City Council Minutes as amended (November 12, 2001 Regular Meeting) and November 26, 2001 Council Bills List.

            Nay:     None

            Motion Carried.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:

 

Riverbend Striders – 2002 Running Series – Motion by Szukhent, seconded by Girard, to approve the Riverbend Striders request to hold the 2002 race series:

 

            1.         Christmas Stocking Run/Walk                           December 1, 2001

            2.         Snowflake Run/Walk                                                    January 12, 2002

            3.         Sweetheart Run/Walk                                                   February 16, 2002

            4.         Shillelagh Four Mile Run/Walk                          March 16, 2002

            5.         Flushing Half Marathon and 5K Run/Walk                    March 30, 2002

            6.         Fox Trot 5K Run/Walk, 10K Run, 15K Run                April 13, 2002

            Motion Carried.

           

December Meeting Schedule – Motion by Bade, seconded by Gault, to cancel the City Council meeting on December 24, 2001.

            Nay:     None

            Motion Carried.

 

Closed Session – Motion by Girard, seconded by Szukhent, that pursuant to the Open Meetings Act that the Council go into closed session to consult with our attorney regarding trial or settlement strategy in connection with the case of Warda vs. the City of Flushing, as an open meeting would have a detrimental financial effect on the city’s litigation or settlement position.

Pending Litigation – Motion by Girard, seconded by Bade, to authorize the City Manager and City Attorney to negotiate with the other party to settle this out of court (Warda –v- City of Flushing).

Motion Fails.
